Artistic images computer generated from mathematical formulas, but designed by humans. Includes free downloads. Family friendly: no profanity, no obscenity. Fractal images are computer generated images that are calculated by the mathematical formulas developed by Mandelbrot and Julia, primarily. There is a rich collection of fractal art producing programs, both free and inexpensive. These allow the artist to design the image, usually visually, and the program then instructs the computer how to calculate the color of each pixel in the image. The most commonly used paid fractal programs include Ultrafractal, which allows users to produce multiple layers, and Xenodream, which allows the artist to design three dimensional fractal "sculptures" including stereograms. Apophysis is a free flame fractal generator which has been widely developed by many people, and produces excellent art. And there are others.
