Alternate History Literature Listed in: Books and Writing > Creative Writing
Alternate history or alternative history is a subgenre of speculative fiction (or some would say of science fiction) that is set in a world in which history has diverged from history as it is generally known. Alternate history literature asks the question, "What if history had developed differently?" Most works in this genre are based in real historical events, yet feature social, geopolitical, or industrial circumstances that developed differently than our own. While to some extent all fiction can be described as "alternate history," the subgenre proper comprises fiction in which a change or point of divergence occurs in the past that causes human society to develop in a way that is distinct from our own.

What it says, really. This page links to the various alternate histories of differing levels of detail that I have created over the years.

   Boiling Point
Boiling Point is a novel about what might happen if the US dug itself a hole so deep, the natural divisions of culture and territoriality asserted themselves and the nation broke apart. Additionally it is the story of several friends and acquaintances in different parts of the US who get caught up in the events in different ways.

A timeline in which the Dardanelles campaign of 1915 was successful; a comparison of civilisation in Eurasia and pre-Columbian America; discussion of a timeline in which the American War of Independence never happened; Rome conquers Germany; Norse colonise America.

   Operation Sealion
The planned German invasion of England, 1940.

   Assassins
The story of America's presidential assassins from their point of view, told in the form of a Broadway musical. Production info, synopsis with musical numbers, cast list, mini-gallery and related merchandise.

Lacuna is a biannual e-journal of historical fiction and alternate history. Our mission is to bring you well-researched, well-written, character-driven fiction and poetry that demonstrates an understanding of both history and human nature.

   Alternate History Books
List of alternate history books, reviews of many of the books (I am still adding reviews), alternate books sorted by theme (vampires, dinosaurs, military, etc.) and era (stone age, roman, American Civil War, World War II, etc.).

   Robert's Alternate History Place

   J.T.'s Alternate History Site
A developing AH site by a history major in college. What if Bonnie Prince Charlie had succeeded in restoring the Stuarts to the throne?
